BSD SpecLink(R)-E Software Announced

ATLANTA — Building Systems Design, Inc. (BSD) today announced the final beta release of its new BSD SpecLink-E (SLE) software and master database for preparing construction specifications. SpecLink-E is the successor to BSD’s award-winning BSD SpecLink+ software currently being used by thousands of design professionals nationwide. SLE is client-server software that uses Microsoft’s SQL Server database management system to support multi-user collaboration over a local area network or a wide area network between multiple offices. The SLE software is also easily installed on a single computer for standalone operation by a single user.

SpecLink-E will participate in the building information modeling (BIM) process through integration with CAD environments such as Revit Architecture 2009 via an integration manager called BSD LinkMan-E(TM) (LME), also in development at BSD with a patent pending. With LinkMan-E and SpecLink-E in place on the same computer or the same network, relevant project data can be transferred in both directions between the CAD environment and the specifications environment. Users will also be able to set SLE so that data from the drawings will inform the specifier about product choices, or the software can be set to automatically select appropriate sections and “pre-edit” the specifications, based on decisions made in the CAD environment. SpecLink-E has been designed to allow real-time updating of its master database over the Internet at any convenient time. The master database updating can be scheduled in off hours with little or no disruption to the specification preparation process. Updates to the individual user’s client software take advantage of Microsoft technology called ClickOnce installation. This allows the client software on each user’s computer to update itself automatically from a central location on the network once the site manager decides to make the update available to users at that site. As with the previous generation SpecLink+ software, data updates to SLE will not overwrite user modifications in any existing projects, including so-called “office master” projects, because of the product’s unique database structure. Project-specific information entered by a user is stored in separate project overlay tables that are automatically merged with the master database content when a project is viewed or printed.

The version of SLE that will be demonstrated at the AIA convention in San Francisco will be distributed to current BSD SpecLink subscribers this summer, together with updates to BSD SpecLink+ and BSD CostLink/AE.

Sign Language Over Cell Phones Comes to United States

A group at the University of Washington has developed software that for the first time enables deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans to use sign language over a mobile phone. UW engineers got the phones working together this spring, and recently received a National Science Foundation grant for a 20-person field project that will begin next year in Seattle.

This is the first time two-way real-time video communication has been demonstrated over cell phones in the United States. Since posting a video of the working prototype on YouTube, deaf people around the country have been writing on a daily basis.

"A lot of people are excited about this," said principal investigator Eve Riskin, a UW professor of electrical engineering.

For mobile communication, deaf people now communicate by cell phone using text messages. "But the point is you want to be able to communicate in your native language," Riskin said. "For deaf people that's American Sign Language."

Video is much better than text-messaging because it's faster and it's better at conveying emotion, said Jessica DeWitt, a UW undergraduate in psychology who is deaf and is a collaborator on the MobileASL project. She says a large part of her communication is with facial expressions, which are transmitted over the video phones.

Low data transmission rates on U.S. cellular networks, combined with limited processing power on mobile devices, have so far prevented real-time video transmission with enough frames per second that it could be used to transmit sign language. Communication rates on United States cellular networks allow about one tenth of the data rates common in places such as Europe and Asia (sign language over cell phones is already possible in Sweden and Japan).

Even as faster networks are becoming more common in the United States, there is still a need for phones that would operate on the slower systems.

"The faster networks are not available everywhere," said doctoral student Anna Cavender. "They also cost more. We don't think it's fair for someone who's deaf to have to pay more for his or her cell phone than someone who's hearing."

The team tried different ways to get comprehensible sign language on low-resolution video. They discovered that the most important part of the image to transmit in high resolution is around the face. This is not surprising, since eye-tracking studies have already shown that people spend the most time looking at a person's face while they are signing.

The current version of MobileASL uses a standard video compression tool to stay within the data transmission limit. Future versions will incorporate custom tools to get better quality. The team developed a scheme to transmit the person's face and hands in high resolution, and the background in lower resolution. Now they are working on another feature that identifies when people are moving their hands, to reduce battery consumption and processing power when the person is not signing.

The team is currently using phones imported from Europe, which are the only ones they could find that would be compatible with the software and have a camera and video screen located on the same side of the phone so that people can film themselves while watching the screen.

Mobile video sign language won't be widely available until the service is provided through a commercial cell-phone manufacturer, Riskin said. The team has already been in discussion with a major cellular network provider that has expressed interest in the project.

The MobileASL team includes Richard Ladner, a UW professor of computer science and engineering; Sheila Hemami, a professor of electrical engineering at Cornell University; Jacob Wobbrock, an assistant professor in the UW's Information School; and UW graduate students Neva Cherniavsky, Jaehong Chon and Rahul Vanam.

Desiderata Releases Jaxcent (AJAX in Java) for the Internet

Jaxcent from Desiderata Software is a Java API for accessing and modifying the Document Object Model (DOM) of the browser.

Version 1 of Jaxcent worked entirely on the client side. While it explored some possibilities of doing AJAX-style operations in Java, it was best suited for intranets and special scenarios such as automated testing and automated browsing.

Version 2 of Jaxcent is an unrestricted Java API for doing full-fledged AJAX operations. It can be run on the open Internet instead of being restricted to intranets. The Java of Jaxcent now runs on the server side, and still gives the Java programmer full control over the client's DOM hierarchy. On the client side, all that is required is to add a single JavaScript include statement to existing HTML content and then the resulting page can communicate with Jaxcent on the server.

On the server side, Jaxcent works with standard Java servlet containers and provides classes that correspond to elements of the Document Object Model (DOM), and that can be instantiated to match HTML elements existing (or dynamically created) on the page. These classes provide methods for interacting with the HTML elements, and for receiving events originating from the HTML elements, all in Java. In addition to dynamic interactions with the HTML elements, Jaxcent also provides access to the session and application context, as well as entirely automatic session data management.

It is not necessary to rewrite existing applications to take advantage of Jaxcent. Using Jaxcent, as needed, one or more AJAX features can be added piecemeal to one or more pages without any need to modify the structure or specifics of the overall application.

For new web applications the entire framework can be built using Jaxcent, taking full advantage of its dynamic capabilities.

Jaxcent works with AJAX capable browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox. Jaxcent is written entirely in Java and JavaScript, and therefore is OS independent.

Jaxcent programmers do not need to work in JavaScript. Jaxcent will work with any existing JavaScript code, and it provides features to take advantage of JavaScript if desired, but primarily Jaxcent programming is all-Java and no-JavaScript programming.

Free Software Brings Affordability, Transparency to Mathematics

Until recently, a student solving a calculus problem, a physicist modeling a galaxy or a mathematician studying a complex equation had to use powerful computer programs that cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. But an open-source tool based at the University of Washington won first prize in the scientific software division of Les Trophées du Libre, an international competition for free software.

The tool, called Sage, faced initial skepticism from the mathematics and education communities.

"I've had a surprisingly large number of people tell me that something like Sage couldn't be done – that it just wasn't possible," said William Stein, associate professor of mathematics and lead developer of the tool. "I'm hearing that less now."

Open-source software, which distributes programs and all their underlying code for free, is increasingly used in everyday applications. Firefox, Linux and Open Office are well-known examples.

But until recently, nobody had done the same for the everyday tools used in mathematics. Over the past three years, more than a hundred mathematicians from around the world have worked with Stein to build a user-friendly tool that combines powerful number-crunching with new features, such as collaborative online worksheets.

"A lot of people said: 'Wow, I've been waiting forever for something like this,'" Stein said. "People are excited about it."

Sage can take the place of commercial software commonly used in mathematics education, in large government laboratories and in math-intensive research. The program can do anything from mapping a 12-dimensional object to calculating rainfall patterns under global warming.

The idea began in 2005, when Stein was an assistant professor at Harvard University.

"For about 10 years I had been really unhappy with the state of mathematical software," Stein said. The big commercial programs – Matlab, Maple, Mathematica and Magma – charge license fees. The Mathematica Web page, for example, charges $2,495 for a regular license. For another program, a collaborator in Colombia was quoted about $550, a special "Third World" discount price, to buy a license to use a particular tool, Stein said.

The frustrations weren't only financial. Commercial programs don't always reveal how the calculations are performed. This means that other mathematicians can't scrutinize the code to see how a computer-based calculation arrived at a result.
"Not being able to check the code of a computer-based calculation is like not publishing proofs for a mathematical theorem," Stein said. "It's ludicrous."

So Stein began a year and a half of frenzied work in which he created the Sage prototype, combining decades' worth of more specialized free mathematical software and filling in the gaps.

"I worked really, really hard on this, and didn't sleep much for a year. Now I've relaxed. There are a lot more people helping out," Stein said. "It seems like everyone in the field has heard of Sage now, which is surreal."

Among those helping is a team of five UW undergraduate students who work part-time on the code – everything from writing new formulas to improving the Google-ish graphical interface. (Even when Sage runs on an individual computer, not over the Internet, you use a Web browser to enter commands.)

Regular meetings, named "Sage days," bring together volunteer developers. The fourth Sage day, held in Seattle in June, drew about 30 people. The sixth Sage day was held last month in Bristol, England. Forty-one people attended talks and many participated in coding sprints. Dozens of other people around the world contribute through Sage's online discussion boards.

Last month, Stein and David Joyner, a mathematics professor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., published a letter in the Notices of the American Mathematical Society in which they argue that the mathematical community should support and develop open-source software.

Soon Sage will face off against the major software companies in physical space. In early January, thousands of mathematicians will gather in San Diego for the joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. In the exhibition hall, Stein has paid the first-timers' rate of $400 to rent a booth alongside those of the major mathematical software companies, where he and students will hand out DVDs with copies of Sage.

"I think we can be better than the commercial versions," he said. "I really want it to be the best mathematical software in the world."

Sage research and student support is made possible by grants from the National Science Foundation. The Sage meetings are supported by various mathematical associations. The project has also received several thousand dollars in private donations.

Ease Software's SATA-on-AIX Replaces SCSI, SAS Drives

hardware and software that worked seamlessly with IBM's
Virtual I/O system on System p(TM) and RS/6000 systems
running AIX(R)? As it turns out, there is: Ease Software,

The BWU-200S drive can record up to 50GB of data for random access
storage and backup on BD-R (write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) discs, or up

It also supports recording on standard single layer 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM

Chitimacha Tribe to Develop Rosetta Stone Software

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 4 - Rosetta Stone Inc., creator of the world's No. 1 language-learning program, has formed a partnership with the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana to develop a unique edition of the award-winning software in the tribe's language, Sitimaxa.

The tribe will own distribution and sales rights to the tribal language version created through the Rosetta Stone Endangered Language Program, which has developed culturally relevant language-learning software with the Mohawk of Kahnawake, NANA Regional Corporation of Alaska, and other indigenous communities.

Through its new corporate grant program, the global language-learning software company will underwrite a substantial portion of development costs for the Sitimaxa software. Rosetta Stone has pledged to underwrite at least one project per year with endangered language speaking communities interested in developing editions of the cutting-edge immersion learning software.

"Our hope is that Sitimaxa Rosetta Stone(R) software will be a tool that will make a difference in the vitality of the language of the Chitimacha Tribe," said Marion Bittinger, manager of the Endangered Language Program. "We look forward to working with the tribe to help realize their vision for a living and growing language."

On Louisiana's coast, the Chitimacha tribe endured for century after century -. surviving war, settlement and assimilation. This same determination to survive has allowed the Chitimacha to revitalize their language, which they almost lost.

"Language is really the heart of who you are. It's not just about learning the words; it's about learning your past. It's that connection," said Kimberly S. Walden, M.Ed., cultural director of the 1,000 member tribe.

The native tongue of the Chitimacha people almost disappeared when its last fluent speaker died in 1934 and its last semi-fluent speaker died in 1940. One generation, then another, grew up knowing no more than a few words of the rich language of their ancestors.

Then in 1986, the Library of Congress mailed the tribe copies of wax cylinder recordings made in the 1930s by Swedish linguist Morris Swadesh. Tribal members listened to over 200 hours of their language .- sounds no one had heard in decades, a cultural treasure buried in archives for half a lifetime. The Chitimacha began rebuilding these fragments back into a fluently spoken language. They recovered field notes made by Swadesh and his wife to help decode what was recorded.

"The recordings were very hard to understand, especially if you'd never heard the language spoken before," Walden said. "You have to realize that, as long as I was growing up, all we had in Sitimaxa was a few words on a museum brochure that no one could pronounce."

In 1995, the Chitimacha tribe established a cultural department. Employees asked archeological contractors in Louisiana if they knew of anyone familiar with the Chitimacha's language .- a long-shot request that, improbably, paid off. Contractors suggested the tribe contact Dr. Julian Granberry, a linguist and anthropologist living in Florida who had worked with Swadesh as a high school sophomore.

Granberry, now 80, had studied their language for decades, but had never visited the reservation. The tribe invited Granberry to share his findings. "When Dr. Granberry spoke Sitimaxa to a group of Chitimacha elders assembled at a meeting, some of the elders began to cry," said Walden. "Words started coming back. They remembered."

With Granberry's help, the Chitimacha tackled the Sitimaxa challenge, using the returned resources to develop dictionaries, curriculum, primers and recordings. The tribe now offers Sitimaxa classes for students as young as six weeks old at its child development center. Students in kindergarten through the eighth grade learn the language at the Chitimacha Tribal School, and adults in night classes.

Rachel Vilcan was one of the first students in the adult class. Now she's an aide in the K-8 Sitimaxa program. "The language sounds natural; it sounds like it fits me, like it fits the area," Vilcan said. "It was scary, at first, to be learning it as an adult, but the desire to learn was stronger. It's our identity."

Like other tribes working to bring tribal language back into daily use, the Chitimacha's goal is to develop conversational fluency. "We want to bring the language back to the point where we can use it conversationally when we gather as a tribe," said Walden.

Through its immersion-based software that can be customized to reflect unique linguistic and cultural features, Rosetta Stone will help the tribe solve this problem. The tribe will work with Rosetta Stone to translate and record lessons in Sitimaxa. The paired audio recordings of tribal speakers and images from the community will teach this endangered language in culturally relevant context using the company's award-winning Dynamic Immersion(TM) methodology.

"I think the chances are very great that they will succeed," Granberry said. "There has been for the last decade a strong interest on the part of a large number of the tribal members."

Ilse Ackerman, editor-in-chief at Rosetta Stone, said this language teaching tool multiplies existing efforts. "If you have a small number of fluent speakers, student time with these teachers is valuable and limited. The software can give students access to their teaching around the clock, allowing communities to save valuable face-to-face instruction time for conversational practice," said Ackerman.

The Chitimacha Tribe will use the immersion-based software to enhance ongoing education programs for children and adults. Tribal members as far away as Guam and Germany will be able to learn Sitimaxa using CDs or through online access when the project finishes.

"Dynamic linking" means that changes to one representation of a problem

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 26 - Parascale today announced the industry's first software-only storage solution to address the unique needs created by digital content including video, images, and audio. Known as the Parascale Virtual Storage Network (VSN) software, it aggregates disks across commodity Linux x86 servers to deliver petabyte-scale file storage. With features such as automated, transparent file replication and file migration, Parascale eliminates storage hotspots and delivers massive read/write bandwidth. Since Parascale makes it practical for a single administrator to manage hundreds of terabytes of data, companies can retain data on-line that was previously relegated to offline storage or not retained at all. The Parascale software is licensed by annual subscription and priced per disk drive.

"The Google File System (GFS) and the Parascale Virtual Storage Network (VSN) employ similar architectures," explained Robin Harris of StorageMojo. International Data Corporation (IDC) reports that digital content is the fastest growing storage segment with volumes doubling annually. Stanford University, one of several Parascale beta sites, manages ultra- high resolution images accumulated using novel high-throughput genome sequencing equipment. "We are working to make it practical to record each person's individual genome, enabling personalized medicine," shared Mostafa Ronaghi, principal investigator at the Stanford Genome Technology Center. "The images we use to map genomes are both very large and extremely valuable, so we need on-line storage that is both scalable and reliable, yet inexpensive enough to permit broad application of the technology. Parascale Virtual Storage Network

The Parascale Virtual Storage Network aggregates the disk storage on commodity Linux servers to provide one or more virtual file systems. The Parascale software configures one Control Node with as many as several hundred Storage Nodes, where each Node is a server. Because the Control Node only directs traffic, all data move directly between client applications and the Storage Nodes, allowing massive read/write bandwidth. Because the x86 servers need only be certified for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, they are available from a wide variety of OEMs, including HP, IBM, and Dell. Because client applications access the VSN via NFS, HTTP, and FTP; no custom client-side software is required, simplifying deployment and maintenance.

The Parascale software provides three unique capabilities for data mobility among servers, all transparent to users of the VSN. First, automatic file replication copies files across servers for data availability in the case of disk or server failure and for performance in the case of heavy read load. Second, automatic file migration distributes files across multiple servers, eliminating server hotspots and improving server utilization. Third, load balancing distributes file requests across all the servers that have a copy of the requested file, reducing the load on any one server to maximize system throughput.

The Parascale Virtual Storage Network is licensed by annual subscription. The software is priced per disk drive (or "spindle"); allowing customers to benefit directly from advances in disk drive capacity. Because Parascale does not depend on RAID, customers can replace failed drives with new units at the current price/performance sweet-spot, without any change in software license fees.

Oracle launches 11g software in India

Oracle today launched its latest software '11g' in India which
would be implemented by partners including HCL Technologies,
Infosys, Satyam, TCS and Wipro Ltd at the customer-end.
Database 11g is a software product providing security of
data to customers besides helping in data warehousing and
content management applications.
"Financial services, communications and government
organisations which have to surmount a large number of
security and compliance issues, will benefit from this
database software," Oracle India Vice President Technology
Sales SPS Grover told reporters.
Oracle said 11g would enable the partners and customers
improve productivity, increase revenue and manage costs. The
software was launched globally in August this year and claims
to have 400 features and is available on Linux operating
systems.
The Indian launch happened after Oracle's local
partners were enabled to implement this latest version of the
software.
Over 80 per cent of our business in India is managed
through partners. Enabling our partners to implement the
latest version of database was key for adoption of 11g in the
country, he said.

to create a new annual award that recognises young scientists

globally and carry a prize of USD 150,000, an Infosys
