Grasp the Maths

First Math Tool that Shows Math in Multiple Ways on Handhelds and Computers; Helps Students Learn Math on Deeper Levels To Prepare for College and Careers

DALLAS, - Forty years after inventing the world's first handheld electronic calculator and changing the way math was taught to generations of students, Texas Instruments (TI) is again transforming math education by introducing the next generation's technology: TI-Nspire(TM) products for math learning.

The TI-Nspire products are the first sets of learning technologies to offer the same user experience in a handheld and corresponding computer software program while presenting math in multiple ways. Students are able to see and make connections among up to four representations of a problem at one time, on one screen, including graphical, algebraic, numeric, geometric or written formats.

The benefits of this approach are based on research that shows each student learns math in different ways, whether it's a graph, table, equation or written form. Students learn concepts more readily and with deeper understanding when they see a problem represented in different ways and are able to choose and evaluate various problem-solving strategies.(1)

TI-Nspire technology allows students to change values and observe the results in real time, which dramatically reduces the time needed to see how various concepts are linked and allows teachers to focus on teaching math, not manipulating multiple technologies.

"Students who take more math courses succeed in college at much higher rates and have the potential to earn more than those who do not. An understanding of math prepares students for future success, and the TI-Nspire is designed to help them understand concepts on a deeper level, ultimately increasing achievement," said Melendy Lovett, president, TI's Education Technology business.

The TI-Nspire handheld is allowed on all of the important college entrance exams, including the PSAT, SAT*, ACT** and AP* math tests.(2) The corresponding computer software allows for additional flexibility so that students and teachers can use PCs, handhelds, or both, at home and in class with the same user experience.

"Building on innovations of the past, we are now ushering in a new era of learning technology, which we believe will shape math education for future generations," added Lovett.

1967-2007: The Future of Education Technology, 40 Years in the Making

The TI-Nspire products build on four decades of innovation beginning in 1967, when TI scientists Jerry D. Merryman, James Van Tassel and Jack Kilby invented the world's first handheld electronic calculator. The original prototype performed four functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), had 12 bytes of memory, ran on batteries and weighed nearly three pounds. It was a significant advancement over previous electronic calculators, which were approximately the size of a typewriter, weighed nearly 55 pounds and needed to be plugged into a power source.

"Once we accomplished the portable calculator, the possibilities were astonishing. It triggered the consumer electronics revolution and was the precursor to devices like cell phones," said Merryman. "Another major impact was on math education -- and the millions of students who have improved math learning because of technology. The TI-Nspire technology is a major advancement that will continue to transform how students learn math."

PC-Like Functionality, Research-Based Features Help Broaden Critical Thinking Skills

TI conducted extensive research and product testing and sought teacher input when developing TI-Nspire products. The company added computer-like functionality and features that help students broaden critical thinking skills and make meaningful connections between the different ways math is represented. Key features and applications include:

-- Dynamically-linked representations of a single problem on one screen.
"Dynamic linking" means that changes to one representation of a problem
are automatically reflected in other representations, which allows
students to understand relationships among math concepts. For example,
students can investigate the relationships among rise, run and slope
using a graph, word problem and spreadsheet.
-- Grab-and-move graphed functions. Manipulate a graph's appearance by
grabbing a line and moving it to see the effect of changes in real
time. This helps students see mathematical relationships and patterns.
-- Word processing and file storage features similar to computer. Students
can create, edit and save documents, review and revise their work, pick
up where they left off in a previous class and easily transfer
documents between their handheld and computer, extending the learning
process beyond the classroom.

TI-Nspire products are being used in more than 150 pilot classrooms worldwide. Qualitative results show that students are more engaged and excited about math and want to continue using the TI-Nspire technology, and teachers are recommending the new technology to others, because it gives them new teaching tools to reach all students.

The products are currently available through educational product dealers, which are listed at http://www.ti-nspire.com/. They will also be available in major retail stores for consumers to purchase for back-to-school 2008 and will cost approximately the same as TI's advanced graphing products.

"The TI-Nspire opens up a whole new world of possibilities, which has helped me to think differently about how I teach my students," said Eric Butterbaugh, Algebra and Geometry instructor at Bread & Roses Integrated Arts High School in Harlem New York. "My students were comfortable with the TI-Nspire after one week and had mastered the features within six weeks."

The world's leading math and science education publishers are developing materials specifically for use with TI-Nspire technology, such as Glencoe/McGraw Hill, Key Curriculum Press, McDougal Littell, Pearson Addison-Wesley, Pearson-Prentice Hall, Wiley Publishing and Wright Group.

For more information about the new TI-Nspire products and the 40th anniversary of TI's invention of the electronic handheld calculator, please visit http://education.ti.com/nspire/press.

TI Kicks Off Week-Long Celebration

Commemorating the invention of the handheld electronic calculator and marking the launch of the TI-Nspire products, TI is hosting a week-long series of events, including: A donation of TI-Nspire products and several historical calculators to the educational technology archives at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History; a temporary exhibit of the 1967 prototype and TI-Nspire products at the Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas; and a traveling display to several education conferences this fall, where teachers will be able to meet one of the inventors.

Storage Solution for Digital Content

Parascale Announces Industry's First Software-Only Storage Solution for Digital Content

"Virtual Storage Network" Targets Petabyte-Scale File Storage; Deploys on Industry-Standard Linux Servers from Dell, HP, or IBM

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 26 - Parascale today announced the industry's first software-only storage solution to address the unique needs created by digital content including video, images, and audio. Known as the Parascale Virtual Storage Network (VSN) software, it aggregates disks across commodity Linux x86 servers to deliver petabyte-scale file storage. With features such as automated, transparent file replication and file migration, Parascale eliminates storage hotspots and delivers massive read/write bandwidth. Since Parascale makes it practical for a single administrator to manage hundreds of terabytes of data, companies can retain data on-line that was previously relegated to offline storage or not retained at all. The Parascale software is licensed by annual subscription and priced per disk drive.

"The Google File System (GFS) and the Parascale Virtual Storage Network (VSN) employ similar architectures," explained Robin Harris of StorageMojo. "VSN, like GFS, builds availability and scalability around low-cost servers and disks. NAS appliances rely on costly low-volume boxes that are closed and don't scale. GFS has been deployed in production clusters of over 5,000 servers, proving the scalability of the architecture." Harris continued, "Fast, reliable, low-cost and massively scalable storage powers the growth of new applications like Web 2.0, video-on-demand, and hi-resolution image archiving. Parascale is the first of a new generation of software-only storage solutions."

International Data Corporation (IDC) reports that digital content is the fastest growing storage segment with volumes doubling annually. "The dramatic growth in use of video, image, and business analytic applications, coupled with regulatory mandates for information retention are changing the storage landscape, as enterprises seek to monetize their information assets," said Richard Villars, vice president of Storage Systems research at IDC. "Along with the emergence of new companies that want to establish gigantic 'content depots' for collecting, storing, and organizing rich content for consumers and businesses, this trend is driving a need for storage solutions like Parascale's that provide both the scalability and flexibility to meet to meet exploding information storage and access needs."

Stanford University, one of several Parascale beta sites, manages ultra- high resolution images accumulated using novel high-throughput genome sequencing equipment. "We are working to make it practical to record each person's individual genome, enabling personalized medicine," shared Mostafa Ronaghi, principal investigator at the Stanford Genome Technology Center. "The images we use to map genomes are both very large and extremely valuable, so we need on-line storage that is both scalable and reliable, yet inexpensive enough to permit broad application of the technology. Parascale gives us large-scale, reliable storage on inexpensive, commodity servers." He continued, "Our repositories grow progressively over time and we need to be able to incrementally expand our storage capacity. With Parascale, we can provision new hardware on a just-in-time basis to take advantage of the advances by server and disk drive manufacturers."

Parascale Virtual Storage Network

The Parascale Virtual Storage Network aggregates the disk storage on commodity Linux servers to provide one or more virtual file systems. The Parascale software configures one Control Node with as many as several hundred Storage Nodes, where each Node is a server. Because the Control Node only directs traffic, all data move directly between client applications and the Storage Nodes, allowing massive read/write bandwidth. Because the x86 servers need only be certified for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, they are available from a wide variety of OEMs, including HP, IBM, and Dell. Because client applications access the VSN via NFS, HTTP, and FTP; no custom client-side software is required, simplifying deployment and maintenance.

The Parascale software provides three unique capabilities for data mobility among servers, all transparent to users of the VSN. First, automatic file replication copies files across servers for data availability in the case of disk or server failure and for performance in the case of heavy read load. Second, automatic file migration distributes files across multiple servers, eliminating server hotspots and improving server utilization. Third, load balancing distributes file requests across all the servers that have a copy of the requested file, reducing the load on any one server to maximize system throughput.

The Parascale Virtual Storage Network is licensed by annual subscription. The software is priced per disk drive (or "spindle"); allowing customers to benefit directly from advances in disk drive capacity. Because Parascale does not depend on RAID, customers can replace failed drives with new units at the current price/performance sweet-spot, without any change in software license fees.

Parascale software is currently in beta testing. General availability is scheduled for November 2007.

'Entertainment While You Wait'

FREE...FREE...Computer Users Worldwide Are Offered 'Entertainment While You Wait' With Popuload RSS Reader

MONTREAL, Sept. 18, 2007 - When RSS feeds started to become more commonly used, the pioneers behind Popuload saw this technology as an opportunity to provide instant entertainment to computer users. Says its founder Mr. Alex Furness from his Montreal office, "We saw an unexplored platform and figured we could give users what they really wanted - entertainment while you wait." The result is that the pioneers behind Popuload have taken the instant information capabilities of RSS and have created a software solution for anyone who has ever been bored while waiting for the tedious loading bar.

For the layman, an RSS feed is a page on the Internet that gets updated with up-to-the minute information which can then be viewed through an RSS feed reader, such as Popuload. When a new piece of information is posted on an RSS feed on the Internet, the reader keeps track of the changes and delivers them to you. Since the technology provides up-to-the-minute content, it saves time browsing the ever-expanding network of news sites on the World Wide Web.

Popuload is a free RSS reader with a difference: it appears and disappears alongside your computer's loading bar. The innovative idea is that computer users will never sit there bored waiting for their computer to perform tedious functions. While waiting to download, copy and print files, with Popuload, you can read the latest news, sports result, celebrity gossip or the news feed of your choice. Indeed, the choice of feeds is vast; from news to entertainment, Popuload offers an expansive range of top quality news feeds. Additionally, if users see a piece of information that is of particular interest to them, they can simply click on it to take them instantly to the full article online. Now when you are waiting to download that file or movie, you can browse leisurely through the news snippets to keep you both informed and entertained with the latest information.

The main difference between Popuload and other feed readers is that Popuload loads automatically with your computer's loading bar. It is also designed so that it can be accessed at any time. In addition, rather than the common method of displaying news feeds in a list, Popuload allows users to interactively browse news items individually through its streamlined, compact window. This feature eliminates the frustration of being confronted with too many feeds at once. Best of all, Popuload is free, and very easy to use. All these features, when taken together, are what make Popuload truly innovative. Entertainment while you wait has never looked better.

For more information on this new, free product, or if you wish to download Popuload, visit http://www.popuload.com

Decompiler for binary software analysis

Hex-Rays Announces First Release of Decompiler

LIEGE, Belgium, Sept. 17, 2007 - Hex-Rays sprl of Belgium announced today the commercial release of its long-awaited decompiler for binary software analysis. After a decade of research into this most difficult area of reverse engineering, Hex-Rays is making available their technology to the analysts and programmers working in the security and compliance sectors.

Hex-Rays sprl CEO, Mr. Ilfak Guilfanov, said: "Analyzing the assembler listing of a binary has always been a very tedious task. With the decompiler, analysts can instead work with a higher level C-like pseudocode. This not only increases the number of people who can perform reverse engineering, but also speeds up the analysis by an order of magnitude."

Hex-Rays decompiler is implemented as a plug-in module for the IDA Pro disassembler. Since most of the reverse engineering today is done with the IDA Pro tool, it makes perfect sense to offer a plug-in that takes advantage of the refined IDA Pro environment. Once IDA finishes creating the functions, it is a simple matter to convert the disassembly into C-like pseudocode. This can produce code that is 10 times more compact and more readable.

In its first release, the new HexRays decompiler supports 32-bit Intel x86 code. Currently, the software that is used on most computers runs Win32 programs. It is also this code base that contains the notorious security flaws that are announced with some regularity. Hex-Rays decompiler will help analysts locate pesky bugs and security flaws more quickly. With the Hex-Rays decompiler, software analysts can see more clearly the logic flow in the code without getting bogged down in several pages of assembly language listings. In the near future, Hex-Rays sprl plans to extend the role of its decompiler through the addition of several new algorithms and by offering a programmer SDK to its corporate customers.

Pricing and Availability:

A single license of the Hex-Rays decompiler costs $1999 with discounts for quantity licenses. Customers can contact Hex-Rays sprl via the Internet on their website http://www.hex-rays.com or phone at +32-4-222-4300. In the US and Canada, customers can call toll-free 1-877-943-2776 to place their order.

ITema Releases Web 2.0 Software Store

provides free Web sites, blogs, forums, and wikis for individuals,
families, clubs, municipalities, and associations

NEW LONDON, Conn., Sept. 17, 2007 (ERN)- ITema, Inc. today
released the first of a new type of software store. Gone are
the days when users buy or download packaged software, then
install, configure, and maintain it themselves. ITema's
hosted and managed service instantly deploys, configures,
and synchronizes Web/e-commerce, accounting, CRM, business
intelligence, e-mail, and other applications in real-time.

ITema supports a rapidly growing list of market-leading
products, including Intuit QuickBooks, Sage Peachtree and
Act!, Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and many popular
Open Source products including SugarCRM, vtiger, and Zimbra.
For about the price of a cable bill, ITema offers immediate
deployment, real-time synchronization, and centralized user
management of a complete business solution.

The company's ad-supported Community Edition provides free
Web sites, blogs, forums, and wikis for individuals,
families, clubs, municipalities, and associations. Paid
subscriptions begin at $49 / month with the single user
Professional Edition that includes a content managed
e-commerce Web site, accounting connectivity, CRM, and
Zimbra e-mail. Small Business and Enterprise Editions
include additional user licenses and product selections at
prices ranging from $129 to $299 / month. Wholesale pricing
is available for VARs and affiliates.

"Many 'Integration' products expect the user to be a
developer, or to run manual imports," said Chad Robinson,
CEO. "ITema takes care of the hard work by providing live
data synchronization across applications in minutes. This
saves customers time and money, and eliminates complexity."

With ITema, integration is universal - when data is edited
in any application, it will be synchronized with every other
application in the customer's account. User accounts are
also centrally managed, simplifying password reset and
account creation operations. Subscribers can even run more
than one accounting product in parallel. This is ideal for
home office use or during product migrations. ITema also
provides backup services for customers' accounting data.

ITema lets small businesses look like big businesses to
their customers. Orders placed on the web site are
accessible in seconds. Content managed Web sites save
calling (and paying) developers for minor text updates.
Blogs, forums, or wikis can be added with a few clicks in
the ITema account manager.

ITema Enterprise Edition users get reporting / business
intelligence tools and a data warehouse that is kept up to
date with information from the accounting, CRM, and other
applications automatically. This provides one-stop shopping
for all reporting needs, allowing creation of
cross-application reports with ease.

ITema customers receive their first 30 days of service free,
and may cancel at any time. Once business owners have
experienced this complete, on-demand business software
solution made up of the applications they want to use, ITema
believes they'll never want to run independent, unconnected
applications again.

New Office 2007 Tutorials Provided Free of Charge

FREDERICK, Md., Sept. 14, 2007 -- In Pictures has released five new tutorials on Microsoft Office 2007 programs. These tutorials are provided free of charge at http://www.inpics.net.

The new tutorials show how to use the 2007 versions of Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. "We think the new Office interface is an improvement," says In Pictures General Manager Chris Charuhas. "However, it's also different, and that means Office 2007 users must learn to do old tasks in new ways. These tutorials provide an easy way to get up to speed."

At http://www.inpics.net, anyone can use the tutorials free of charge. Since the site was launched in January, over 250,000 people have used the tutorials there. Sponsorship, rather than banner advertising, generates income for the site. Right now the site's sponsor is Visilearn, which provides similar tutorials to schools and corporations.

While most site visitors come from the U.S. and Canada, traffic from developing countries is growing quickly. "We got a nice email last week from a computer instructor in Pakistan who was using the tutorials," says Mr. Charuhas. Because the tutorials are based on pictures instead of words, they're becoming popular among computer users for whom English isn't their first language.

About In Pictures

In Pictures tutorials are published by Visibooks, LLC, based in Frederick, Maryland. The company provides two brands of illustration-based computer learning materials: In Pictures tutorials for individuals, and Vislearn tutorials and books for classroom use. In Pictures tutorials are available at http://www.inpics.net.
